And the truly bizarre… I typed ‘formap ?j)’ and ReCAPTCHA accepted it!

    Yep, ReCAPTCHA shows you one word it knows and one word it doesn’t know, and your input is used to help crowdsource decoding of words OCR can’t recognize. So you only have to correctly answer the one it already knows–you could have typed anything as the second word and I bet it would have accepted it.
