Great post, Stephen! Thanks for sharing. Hopefully, Bob won't hunt you down and scold you for wrecking the vacuum chamber :)

You've inspired me now. Last year I had started a similar post, though with a different angle. I'm gonna dust that draft off and see if I can finish it.

Cheers.

February 2012 update: Ga. State Sen. Golden has introduced SB 402 to allow certain state pension funds (NOT the teachers' pension fund; they're specifically excluded) to invest in alt assets, including venture capital: http://www.legis.ga.gov/legislation/en-US/Display/20112012/SB/402

Soket was one of the Flashpoint companies and, from an insider's point of view, it was great! Codifying start up methodologies on top of the Lean Startup concept was extremely effective and worked well with a collection of teams that have technical and "engineering" depth. One of the things I liked the most was the organizers' success attracting mentors from across the country and creating opportunities (in NYC and on the West Coast) for Flashpoint teams to step onto the national stage.

I'm looking forward to seeing the next Flashpoint cohort!

Marcel Crudele, President

Stephen:

The technology community here ought to be proud of this and other efforts to build a startup ecosystem that is uniquely Atlanta.

Kudos to SAIC and United Technologies Corporation for their financial support of the program. But more is needed.

I also use Evernote, especially for organizing and making searchable handwritten notes of my research ideas. Some other apps I use are Springpad for keeping a library of my books, Dropbox for accessing my files, TED for being inspired on the go, and Wunderlist for managing my task. All these apps are FREE, and you can read about them on my latest blog post here: http://joachimscholz.wordpress.com/2012/01/24/5-free-iphone-apps-for-academics/
